God Wanted Children
My favorite verse in the Bible is 1 John 3:1. This is how it reads in the KJV: “Behold what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God.”
That phrase “what manner” generally refers to something wonderful, amazing, and perhaps even surprising. When Jesus calmed the storm out on the sea, His disciples were amazed and said, “What manner of man is this…” (Matthew 8:27). What an amazing man was Jesus who calmed the storm!
In 1 John 3:1, John wants us to see how amazing it is that God loves us so very much. He’s saying: Stand back and gaze and marvel at the amazing and wonderful love of God! John recognizes, and he wants us to see, the greatness of God’s love.
It’s amazing that He would love us at all, considering the magnitude of our sins. We really don’t deserve the love of God, and we don’t deserve to be His children on our own merit. But God loved us anyway and gave His Son to die for us, all because He wanted us to be His children. We’re adopted as children of God, and only because God is that good, and He loves us that much.
